Armor in the Darkness. Grace in the Light.
As a new believer in Christ, I've found myself wrestling with the difference between good and evil, especially when it comes to traditions I've loved my entire life.
As most of my friends and family know, I LOVE Halloween!
Growing up with a passion for makeup and creativity, Halloween was always an opportunity to showcase my talents, use my imagination, and, let's be honest, play dress-up! It's something I've enjoyed since I was young.
But this year felt different.
As I continue growing in my relationship with Christ, I found myself questioning whether I should participate at all. Was dressing up somehow promoting evil? Was I celebrating something that went against my faith?
I genuinely struggled with those questions because the last thing I want to do is dishonor God.
Then something dawned on me.
I was reminded of a message I heard from Kirk Cameron about how evil comes from the choices people make. God created this beautiful world and gave us gifts, talents, creativity, and imagination. It's what we choose to do with those gifts that matters.
If you're dressing up, expressing your creativity, or pretending to be something you've always dreamed of becoming, does that automatically make it evil?
I don't believe it does.
Are you participating in rituals, casting spells, sacrificing animals, or intentionally glorifying darkness? That's a very different conversation.
But if you're spending time with family, making memories, creating something beautiful, and bringing joy to others, why can't that be an opportunity to reflect goodness instead?
Last year, my family dressed up as Warriors for Christ, proudly representing our faith and reminding ourselves that Jesus is Lord!
And that got me thinking...
Why should darkness get to claim a day that God created?
As Christians, we're called to be a light in this world, not just on Sundays, not just on holidays, but every single day.
I'm still learning. I'm still growing in my faith. And I certainly don't claim to have all the answers. I know Christians have different convictions about Halloween, and I respect those who choose not to participate.
But one thing I am learning is that my relationship with Christ isn't just about what I avoid. It's also about what I choose to represent.
So, is Halloween evil?
I believe that depends on what you choose to celebrate, what you participate in, and where your heart is.
As for me, I choose to celebrate creativity, family, love, and the light of Christ.
Because no matter what day the calendar says, Jesus is Lord.
